Continuing Education Requirements and Updates for Licensees

Licensees receiving their first license on November 1, 2008 or after are in their first renewal cycle and are exempt from continuing education requirements for the current biennium. All other licensees must complete 30 hours of continuing education for the biennium ending March 31, 2011. Five (or seven) of the hours must be as follows:

  • 2 hours in the prevention of medical errors (must be obtained from our Continuing Education providers approved specifically for the prevention of medical errors course).
  • 3 hours in ethics and boundary issues.
  • 2 hours of domestic violence every six years

Domestic Violence:Section 456.031, Florida Statutes was revised in 2006 to require the two-hour domestic violence (DV) course be taken as part of every third biennial re-licensure or re-certification.

This means:
  • If you were already licensed in 2006, the DV requirement is due within 6 years (2012) and then every 6 years thereafter

  • If you were licensed in 2007 or after, the DV requirement is due within 6 years of the licensure date and every 6 years thereafter

To determine the year you were licensed:

  • Go to the License Verification Search Screen
  • Enter your name or license number
  • Click Find Provider
  • Find and click on your name from the search result list - your original issue date can be found under the General Information tab

If audited, you will be asked to enter all CE in the CE tracking system, free of charge. The tracking system is set-up to check for this course in the six years prior to the audit.

Rule 64B4-6, Florida Administrative Code provides detailed information about renewal. Specifically, Rule 64B4-6.001, F.A.C., provides in-depth renewal information and Rule 64B4-6.002, F.A.C., provides further information about approved courses for continuing education.
