Disease Reporting in Florida
Florida enacted legislation in 1917 requiring the reporting of communicable
diseases. As had been repeatedly remarked at the time, "No health
department, State or local, can effectively prevent or control disease
without knowledge of when, where, and under what conditions cases are
occurring." With this information which is gathered in an accurate and
consistent manner, we can determine the kind of health interventions that
are necessary to control disease and the areas where the efforts should be
made.
The list of reportable diseases is revised periodically and is detailed in
Florida Administrative Code (F.A.C.) Rule 64D-3. For example, a
disease may be added to the list as a new pathogen emerges, or a disease may
be deleted as its incidence declines. Please see the section with
information for health professionals for a
detailed list of diseases and conditions that are required to be reported by
physicians and laboratories.
Data on selected notifiable diseases are published monthly in
Epi Update and at year-end in the
Annual Morbidity Statistics Report.
Data is also available through
Florida's Interactive Communicable Disease Frequency Reports. |
