Covered Services

Comprehensive family planning services are available in all 67 counties through the local county health departments or contract providers. FDA approved methods of contraception are available. Services are provided on a sliding scale fee based on the individual's income after eligibility has been determined. There is no charge for services to clients with incomes up to 100% of the current federal poverty level. Priority is placed on serving low-income individuals who are at risk of unwanted pregnancy.

County health departments offer counseling and referrals for subsidized sterilization services, providing low-income women and (in some counties) men with services for free or on a sliding scale fee basis.

Comprehensive family planning services include:

  • Initial family planning visit includes:
    • Health history
    • Pre-examination education session
    • Pre-conceptional counseling
    • Health promotion education
    • Physical examination
    • Required lab tests
    • Selection of contraceptive method and provision of supplies
    • Post-examination interview

  • Annual Family Planning visit includes:
    • Updating the original data in the patient record
    • Physical examination
    • Required lab tests
    • Addressing renewal needs of contraceptive method
    • Post-examination interview

  • Counseling visits to discuss family planning method include:
    • All information necessary to increase the client's understanding of family planning methods
    • Provision of supplies for the contraceptive method
    • Identification of any problems with the current birth control method

  • Supply visits include:
    • Check blood pressure and weight
    • Check for any side effect of medications
    • Provision of supplies or prescriptions for the contraceptive method

  • Laboratory services may include:
    • Hemoglobin and/or hematocrit
    • Urinalysis
    • Cervical pap smear
    • Screening and collection of specimens for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)
    • HIV risk assessment and testing
    • Rubella titer
    • Tuberculin skin test
    • Pregnancy test as indicated

  • Other Services may include:
    • IUD insertion and removal
    • Diaphragm and cervical cap fitting/replacement
    • Depo-Provera injection
    • Treatment of abnormal lab results may include antibiotics necessary for treatment of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), vaginal infections, urinary tract infections and referral as needed

Family planning plays a key role in the prevention of unintended pregnancy, including adolescent pregnancy. Preventing unintended pregnancy also reduces the incidence of abortion and improves birth outcomes. In addition, family planning information, education, and services reduce both the incidence and impact of sexually transmitted diseases through screening and treatment.
