Trauma Awareness DayMay 21, 2008Trauma is the leading cause of death for all individuals under the age of 40 in the United States, almost one in four Americans suffer a traumatic injury. Traumatic injuries cause more childhood deaths than all diseases combined and account for 55 percent of all deaths among adolescents. When serious traumatic injuries occur, rapid transport, prompt treatment and early rehabilitation of the victim reduce the physical, emotional and financial costs. In a proclamation signed on February 15, Governor Charlie Crist proclaimed May 21, 2008 as Trauma Awareness Day to join with national and other state leaders to raise attention to trauma and what must be done to reduce the devastating impact of traumatic injuries in our state. Each year on Trauma Awareness Day and throughout the month of May, the Trauma System providers hold celebrations at the local, regional, and state levels. These events bring together the local communities, emergency medical providers, and other partners to celebrate the survivors of traumatic injury; and to promote the benefits of quality trauma care, research, and outreach services provided by Floridas Trauma System personnel throughout the continuum of care. For more specific information about these events, please click on the Trauma Awareness Day Events link below. Florida meets performance standards for state trauma systems based on the American College of Surgeons guidelines and has demonstrated that an effective trauma system saves lives.
